Tips to Help Your Newly Adopted Rabbit Settle In

Welcoming a rabbit into your life is full of quiet joys and gentle progress. Every nibble, nudge, and hop is a reminder that love builds over time. Adopting a rabbit is the start of a relationship built on trust, gentleness, and joy. Whether you're a first-time bunny parent or expanding your furry family, giving a rabbit a stable and loving environment makes all the difference. Here are some essentials to help your new companion feel safe, seen, and supported:

Set the Scene for Safety

Rabbits are sensitive creatures, easily overwhelmed by loud environments or busy spaces. Choose a quiet area of the home and provide hideouts like cardboard boxes (with at least two entries) or soft tunnels. Let them explore gradually – start small and expand their space as confidence grows.

Patience To Gain Trust

Building trust takes time, and that’s okay. Sit nearby and let your bunny initiate contact. Curious sniffing, relaxed body language, and the occasional nose boops are all good signs. Avoid picking them up during the first few days; most rabbits prefer interactions on the ground.

Keep Meals Familiar

A sudden diet change can upset a rabbit’s delicate digestive system. If possible, start with the food they’re used to, then ease into your preferred diet overtime. Always provide unlimited hay and fresh water and introduce new greens slowly, focusing on rabbit-safe choices like romaine, parsley, and cilantro.

Prioritize Health Early

Schedule a check-up with your regular exotic vet to establish care. Monitor droppings, appetite and energy – changes here are often the first signs that somethings wrong. For Colorado-local veterinarian resources, click here.
